A medieval center
To visit Malestroit is to soak up its atmosphere by strolling through its streets and especially by discovering its smallest secrets, its smallest corners … cobbled streets, half-timbered or renaissance houses, unusual and sometimes mocking sculptures, … The Besants circuit allows you to discover these treasures through the medieval streets or along the Canal de Nantes à Brest.
A church out of time
First Chapel, the Church of Saint-Gilles becomes Romanesque with a southern facade and, appear over time hints of Gothic, it hides in it many mysteries. Could it be because it was built over a sacred spring? One can admire magnificent stained glass windows illuminating a vault which reveals exceptional paintings whose secrets have not yet been discovered. Another peculiarity of this building, it is claimed that in the afternoon, around 3pm solar time, the shadow of the ox and its base -an eagle for some, a winged dragon for others- project the classic profile of Voltaire on the wall.
A part of our history
A little hidden because a little off-center the remains of the Chapel of the Madeleine are in fact one of the most beautiful jewels of the Small town of character. Here, in its places where only four walls and a bell tower remain (the oldest in Morbihan) was signed by Philippe VI de Valois, king of France and Edward III, king of England one of the truces of the Hundred Years War in 1343.
At the Canal
All the alleys lead to the Canal! No matter where we are in the medieval center, we will always come across the Canal de Nantes à Brest and its towpath. A real breath of fresh air, you can walk, cycle or take a boat ride along the canal. You can also picnic and relax on a bench or lie under the large trees along the towpath and the embankment. Actor of the local life, the canal, we meet there in the evening with friends, on Sundays with family and throughout the year to stroll.
A city that celebrates
Malestroit offers its inhabitants and visitors many rich and varied events throughout the year. The city displays its character with the Festival au Pont du Rock which has been hosting artists such as Yodelice, Trust or even Hyphen Hyphen for 30 years ( 1st weekend of August). In addition to rock, the city is open to all kinds of music and proves it with Les vendredis du canal which offers free concerts in the city center every Friday in summer.
